Abstract: The flow, fuel injection, acomization, mixing and combustion characteristics of 3D cavity and a comparison with traditional 2D cavity were presented. The conclusions are as following: (1)Compared with traditional 2D configuration,3D cavity can promote its mass, moments and energy exchanges between cavity and primary flow by its intensified transverse vortex and turbulence, which contribute to a more enhanced fuel/air mixing and flame stabilizing, but the degree and mechanism of enhancement is different with structure and flow conditions.(2)3D cavity induces a higher degree of flow imbalance and unsteadiness in cavity, which has an important influence on fuel mixing and atomization. For better atomization and mixing, the injection should be optimized with the cavity structure and flow condition.(3)Local back flow of cavity’s hot gas in the upstream is observed in present reacting flow cases, which results from the increase of pressure, temperature in combustion state.
